Interview: The Colour of Transformation

It was an honour to join forces with six Global Majority women to discuss our experiences working in conservation, natural history and the outdoors. My interview will be included alongside interviews with Rhiane Fatinikun (Black Girls Hike), Jade Adams-White (The Jadeite Project), Chantelle Lindsay (CBeebies), Miranda Lowe (Natural History Museum), Jini Reddy (Author of Wanderland) and Nadia Sheikh (Right to Roam).

Our stories form the basis of the latest documentary and artist’s film #TheColourOfTransformation🦋 directed by Bryony Benge-Abbott. The film shares new perspectives on nature and aims to address the lack of diversity in conversations around the ecological crisis.

Inspired by the metaphor of butterfly metamorphosis, conversations with women of the Global Majority forging new paths in some of the least diverse sectors in the UK - conservation, natural history and the outdoors - illuminate both the pressures and the potential for change in embarking on such a journey. From hiking to writing, these pioneering women are challenging stereotypes about who ‘belongs’ in nature and in doing so, empowering others to develop their own sense of agency.

The artist’s film and documentary have been created with an award-winning team of creatives, with an original music score by Orphy Robinson MBE featuring the sublime vocals of Bumi Thomas. It features interviews with the founders of Black Girls Hike, All The Elements, the Jadeite Project, the Kinder in Colour protest and TV presenter Chantelle Lindsay, Natural History Museum curator Miranda Lowe CBE and author Jini Reddy.

Following the documentary, Bryony has worked with an award-winning team of creatives to respond to our stories through a fusion of music, storytelling,  dance and vibrant patterns. It asks, what narratives do we need to let go of in order to radically reimagine our relationship with nature?
